March 1, 2024 is a date to mark with a white stone. Akira Toriyama, the famous Japanese manga artist behind Dragon Ball, has left us. A week later (March 8, 2024), tributes of all kinds flooded social networks as the world learned the terrible news. At the same time, a YouTube channel decided to create a new Live Action version of Dragon Ball, and the result lives up to the legend.
Fans still painfully remember the only film adaptation of Dragon Ball. Dragonball Evolution was released on April 1 (you can't make this up) 2009 and was unanimously… against it. It is to this day (March 11, 2024) one if not THE worst adaptation of a manga ever made, and there is competition in the field (Death Note on Netflix not to mention than another more recent one). Remembering such a session is not an easy task, but fortunately an artist specializing in visual effects tried to successfully restore the image of the franchise.
This Live Action Dragon Ball movie does not exist
stryder HD (@stryderHD) is a YouTube channel followed by 318 thousand subscribers and with more than 600 videos at the time of writing this article. His audiovisual productions regularly create buzz, starting with his fake trailers. Man of Steel 2: Man of Tomorrow and Doctor Stranger with Tom Cruise as Iron Man have respectively 13 and 5.1 million views. One of his latest creations published on March 3 attracted nearly 800 thousand people, and for good reason. Stryder HD offers a Live Action version of Dragon Ball that far surpasses the film directed by James Wong.
Beyond the visuals generated using artificial intelligence and composition choices, this concept trailer perfectly transposes the world of Akira Toriyama into “live action” while retaining this very particular character specific to manga and anime. For the purposes of his video, the artist virtually offers the services of a five-star casting. We thus find Jackie Chan (Master Roshi), Ryan Reynolds (Goku) Luke Evans (Vegeta), Emilia Clarke (Bulma), Gemma Chan (Chi-Chi), Idris Elba (Piccolo), Martin Klebba (Krillin) and finally Jason Momoa (Broly) to embody beings who have become pop-culture icons
A new Dragon Ball animated series
To properly celebrate the forty years of the franchise, Toei Animation will launch the Dragon Ball Daima series next November. Supposed to take place between the events of Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super, the anime focuses on three key characters. Son Goku, Vegeta and Kaio Shin travel to a distant planet to ward off a bad spell that has made them the size of a child. If the concept is necessarily reminiscent of that of Dragon Ball GT, Dragon Ball Daima is above all a return to basics. A gentle wind of adventure blows through this project which will pay homage to the creator of one of the most influential universes of the modern era.
