After almost a decade since the last installment, the saga Mad Max will return this year with Angry, a spin-off focused on the character originally played by Charlize Theron, now played by Anya Taylor-Joy. Although many expected Theron's return, director George Miller revealed a key reason behind this decision.
In an interview with Empire, Miller explained that he initially considered rejuvenating Theron with technology to include her in the film. However, after seeing the films The Irishman and Gemini, directed by Martin Scorsese and Ang Lee respectively, he changed his mind.
“It definitely would have been Charlize [si Furiosa se hubiera rodado antes que Fury Road]. As time went on, I started thinking, 'Oh, maybe we could rejuvenate her.' Then I saw really masterful filmmakers like Ang Lee and Martin Scorsese, making Gemini and The Irishman respectively, and I saw that he hadn't surpassed himself. All you would see would be: 'Look how well the technology works…'. “It wouldn't have been convincing.”
Miller believed that if he added this technology to his film, viewers would focus more on a rejuvenated Charlize Theron than on the film itself. That is why, after a long casting process, she chose to choose a younger actress for the new film.
It's important to note that this spin-off is set 15 years before the events of Mad Max: Fury Road, meaning Theron wouldn't be a good fit for a role supposedly playing a 16-year-old character at the time. . Angry is scheduled to hit theaters on May 24, 2024.
