The cannon can burn nice holes in incoming projectiles.
UK Ministry of Defense demonstrated field testing of the DragonFire system. This is a laser cannon designed to destroy a variety of low-flying targets.
During testing, DragonFire fired at drones, mortar rounds and other targets. You can see the process of testing the gun in a video declassified by the Ministry of Defense.
Please note: both static and dynamic tests were carried out. The cannon fired both at a stationary fixed target and at a real target located in the air not far from the installation.
The DragonFire's firing range is at least 1 kilometer. At this distance, the cannon can hit a target the size of a 5-ruble coin.
This is what the result of firing a mortar shell with a laser cannon looks like. It seems that there was no explosive inside the shell – otherwise it would probably have detonated when the body melted.
The UK Ministry of Defense believes that systems similar to DragonFire can be used to protect both stationary bases and mobile objects – for example, ships. There is no talk yet of the system being put into service.
