To bring dead things back to life, there is black magic. But if you want to bring old abandoned games back from limbo, it's best to invest in dev kits.
TimeSplitters 4 ever
This isn't the first time we've heard of incredible finds from people managing to snag dev kits. Guess what ? That's how a Reddit user got his hands on an in-development version of TimeSplitters 4, an FPS that Free Radical was producing back in 2008. This was done in the simplest way in the world: by purchasing a PS3 development kit on eBay.
“I asked the seller a lot of questions (…), he actually had a friend who had worked at Free Radical until November 2008, a month before the studio closed its doors” specifies a certain Flimsy- Zebra3775 on Reddit. To avoid as much as possible a big joke that would have cost him dearly, he asks the seller for a video of what the kit contains. The seller then boots up the console and discovers that there was in fact a prototype of the canceled (in 2008) version of TimeSplitters 4.

As PC Gamer points out, after spending more than $670 to get the kit, Flimsy-Zebra3775 uploaded the game to Hidden Palace for everyone to enjoy. On Reddit, many users thanked him and congratulated him for “supporting video game preservation efforts”. Even David Doak, the boss of Free Radical, was amused by this “find”.
They have Free Radical, they have it all figured out
Since the prototype was made available to the whole world, various videos can be viewed on the web. Enough to discover a confrontation in a sort of Gothic castle under a storm, against bots running in all directions.
The prototype dates from 2008, the year of the first closure of the studio (which failed to recover from the failure of Haze). The rest, we know: Crytek will buy the studio and transfer its staff elsewhere. Free Radical and TimeSplitters will rise from the ashes in 2021 at Embracer, but the studio will be closed again in 2023. We would like to go back in time to spare Free Radical from this endless stream of bad news…
