Angry Birds and Sonic the Hedgehog are in a crossover announced by Sega after the acquisition of Rovio, creators of the mobile game, a year ago.
Sega's acquisition of Rovio a year ago has borne fruit: the mascots of the two companies, Sonic the Hedgehog y Angry Bidsthey will coincide in one (or several) crossovers.
Last year, Sega bought the Finnish studio Rovio, creators of the last decade's phenomenon Angry Birds, for 775 million dollarsas part of Sega's strategy to increase its potential in mobile games.
After a long time being rumored, the crossover between Sonic the Hedgehog and Angry Birds has been announced through this image, with new renders of the characters from both universes.
They have not given details of what this crossover will consist of. The most logical thing is to wait a new mobile video gamewhich mixes the slingshot mechanics of Angry Birds (an addictive game like few others) with the characters from the world of Sonic.
The truth is that, after being a “hit” after its launch in 2009, Angry Birds has been largely forgotten even by casual players (for many, it is already a “retro” game).
Rovio's attempts to relaunch the franchise have been fairly low-key, and have alienated to his fansso perhaps now with the money and strength of Sega, and with the help of Sonic, Angry Birds will regain its popularity.
Angry Birds helps Sonic and Sega conquer the mobile market
Sega is taking its mobile strategy very seriously. Just yesterday we found out that they have a studio working on a new Sega All-Star Tennis… which will be exclusive to Apple Arcade, just like Sonic Dream Team.
On consoles, Sonic x Shadow Generations will be this fall's Sonic game (preceding the third movie in December), a remaster of the 2011 game with new levels.
As a curiosity, Sonic's render of this artwork by Sonic x Angry Birds seems to be the same as Sonic Generationsbut improved… maybe Angry Birds will also appear in the console game?
