Nowadays we are accustomed to the high quality of video games based on superheroes and Rocksteady's Batman Arkham series has started a certainly positive trend for games dedicated to the Batman. But in the history of the Dark Knight there has been no shortage of bad games… on the contrary! Here are 5 really creepy ones.
Batman Beyond Return Of The Joker
Return Of The Joker is one of the most acclaimed animated Batman films, released in 2000 as part of the Batman Beyond series. What could go wrong in producing a tie-in for the consoles of the time? Apparently all because Batman Beyond Return Of The Joker is still one of the worst video games ever. A rather confusing, technically obscene scrolling fighting game on both PS1 and Nintendo 64, with boring and repetitive gameplay. Terrible in every way.
Batman Dark Tomorrow
Released in 2003 under the Kemco label, Batman Dark Tomorrow it comes out first on GameCube and then arrives on Xbox, in both cases in the form of an announced disaster. A third-person single player 3D action game with stealth elements and designed for an adult audience, on paper excellent intentions, but unfortunately the realization is just decent and the game is actually broken in many aspects, almost unplayable and very chaotic. Sin.
Batman Vengeance
The Batman license in the hands of Ubisoft has not particularly shone Batman Vengeance unfortunately follows the same vein as Batman Beyond Return Of The Joker. Inspired by Batman Night Knight, the animated series sequel to Batman The Animated Series, Vengeance is a rather generic action game that in no way manages to capture the spirit and essence of the Dark Knight.
Batman Begins
In 2005, Batman made his triumphant return to cinemas after the commercial flop of Batman & Robin and a series of canceled projects between the late 1990s and early 2000s. If Nolan's film at the cinema is an epochal success, the same cannot be said of Electronic Arts' video game: technically discreet but aesthetically crude, Batman Begins is the classic case of wasted license, despite having some interesting ideas on its side. But bad tie-ins were pretty much the norm back then… think of Catwoman, also from Electronic Arts.
Batman & Robin
Batman & Robin is a flop and as mentioned above it will put an end to the Batman film franchise for over seven years. The video game for PlayStation was equally a failure, the arcade nature did not go well with a game of this kind, the controls were cumbersome and the game stuttered incredibly even during phases with fewer enemies on the screen, a symptom of poor optimization. It could have been done better, but overall it failed.
