The median salaries of those who changed jobs in the past year are often the same as the salaries of those who continue to work for the same company. Only specialists with more than 10 years of experience can count on higher compensation when changing jobs.
This is stated in the statistics of the DOU winter salary survey, which took place in December 2023.
The survey involved 11,120 IT specialists in Ukraine and 2,047 Ukrainian IT specialists who traveled abroad.
Who changes jobs more often?
IT specialists who live in Ukraine and IT specialists abroad generally have a similar situation.
23% of IT specialists in Ukraine changed companies; 65% of specialists did not do this; About 8% found their first job in IT in 2023.
Middles and juniors changed jobs more often: 31% of middles and 30% of juniors either moved to another company in 2023 or lost their job and are now looking for a new one.
Among seniors there are 26% of such people. Lead+ level specialists changed companies least often: only 13% of them found employment elsewhere, and 2% were looking for a new place.
The situation is similar for Ukrainian IT specialists abroad. About a third of juniors, middles and seniors have already changed jobs or are looking for one, versus 12% among Lead+ level specialists.
Most frequently changed jobs:
Customer Success specialists (50% were employed by another company in 2023 or are looking for); game designers (43%) and marketers; specialists in PR, SMM and copywriting (42%).
Developers, QA, PM and DevOps specialists, as well as system administrators, ERP/CRM specialists, HR, recruiting and finance specialists changed jobs less often than others: more than 65% of them work in the same place as a year ago.
The situation abroad is similar: marketers and designers changed jobs more often than others, while developers, QA, PM, DevOps and HR specialists changed jobs less often. Among the differences, Data Science and Data Engineering specialists abroad changed jobs more often than their colleagues in Ukraine (32% versus 25%).
Median salaries in Ukraine do not depend on job changes

Salaries of specialists primarily depend on work experience – IT specialists who moved to a new job in 2023 have the same median salary as other colleagues with similar experience.
Specialists with more than 10 years of experience can expect a higher salary when changing jobs. Those who have worked for more than 10 years in their current specialization and changed jobs in 2023 receive more than those who remained in their company – $5,300 versus $4,940.
The situation abroad is more favorable for IT specialists who are ready to change companies. There, not only the most experienced professionals, but also people with 2 to 7 years of experience can expect higher salaries when they re-enter the workforce: the median salaries of those who change jobs are higher than those who remain with their company.
The salaries of IT specialists who have lost their jobs and are now looking for a new one differ from the salaries of those who are employed. Typically, their median salaries in their previous jobs were lower than the salaries of those involved in the job.
