For its 7th anniversary, PlayerUnknown's Battleground is increasing its announcements, to the delight of veterans and newcomers alike!
If it is one of the pioneers of Battle Royale, alongside DayZ and H1Z1, PlayerUnknown's Battleground is no longer the figurehead of the genre, the place being occupied by the giant Fortnite. Cheating still ruins the player experiencebut the roadmap from Krafton (the publisher of the title) for 2024 provides for a “stove” overhaul.
“Royal” update
A host of gameplay changes have been announced. From next April, destructible environments will be gradually added. Doors and walls can be knocked down with explosives and the ground, which is much softer, can be dug with a shovel or mortar. The following months will also bring their share of new features, such as portable ziplines For example.
These changes aim to introduce dynamic gaming experiences. This decision was born from the idea that an interactive world could pave the way for a wider range of strategy and tactics – Seungkyu Kim (PUBG | Dev Talk: 2024 Roadmap)
Yoojoo Kim, designer and producer on PUBG, also announces that a revamped version of Erangel (the very first map of the title) will be playable, to wish a happy birthday to the game which celebrates its seven candles this year. Krafton also indicates that it is working on the artificial intelligence of its bots (replacing missing players in teams) to make them more realistic, but also to a passage on Unreal Engine 5.
In war as in war
This in-depth overhaul of PlayerUnknown's Battleground also addresses the title's main flaw: cheating. For years, servers have been plagued by cheaters, to the point whereone of the axes of the year's program is entirely dedicated to it. The anti-cheat software (Zakynthos) based on AI, implemented last year, has already proven itself. It has made it possible to “stabilize the situation” but there remains “significant room for progress, the number of fraudsters still being significant”, explain the developers. This deep learning artificial intelligence system (which learns by itself), will be extended to unclassified gamesallowing more in-depth cleaning of servers.
With over 3,189,000 accounts permanently banned in 2023 (an increase of 33% compared to the previous year), PUBG, with the help of this anti-cheat system, continues its crusade against cheaters. The developers remain attentive to players, as they state in their presentation video: “We are committed to communicating frankly with you on any problems or advances related to anti-cheat (…) We will communicate important achievements or projects through development letters.
