Apple is continuing to make changes to its policies regarding applications on iPhone. Unlike what has happened so far, the Cupertino giant has opened up the possibility of downloading apps onto your devices directly from the developers' websites without using an official or third-party marketplace. This is an unprecedented move. The feature, reports The Verge, should be available this spring.
Apple will thus allow an app to be made available externally only to developers enrolled in the Apple Developer Program and to companies that own at least one application with over one million first installations on iOS in the European Union in the previous calendar year. To download apps from developer websites, users will first need to give consent in the settings menu.
On the page we read that “Apple will authorize developers who meet specific criteria and who will commit to complying with requirements that help protect users. Authorized developers will have access to APIs that facilitate the deployment of developer apps from the web, integrate with system features, back up and restore user apps, and more. Apps offered via web distribution must meet authentication requirements to protect the integrity of the platform, like all iOS apps, and can only be installed from a website domain that the developer has registered in App Store Connect.”
Apple is adapting to European Union directives after the latter approved the Digital Market ACT (DMA) on September 14, 2022. The Cupertino giant's decision to make iOS 17.4 available, a historic update for the iPhone, also goes in this direction. And what do you think? Let us know, as always, below in the comments.
