Invented by Apple, MagSafe is the in-house induction charging system for iPhones. The term can, however, cause confusion because it is also used for MacBooks and refers to their magnetic connector dedicated to charging. In this guide, we therefore cover the accessories provided for the iPhone.
MagSafe is thus a spiritual evolution of Qi charging, which is found on a number of devices. Apple has added a circular magnet on the back to its iPhones. The latter serves both as a support, but also to align the induction coils more precisely, which allows the charging power to be increased to 15 W – compared to 7.5 W in Qi.
We have collected for you the most interesting MagSafe accessories.
If you're looking for more versatile Qi chargers, be sure to read our buying guide to the best wireless chargers. To take full advantage of your MagSafe charger, you will also need a power supply: also discover our comparison of the best USB-C chargers.
The best MagSafe chargers
The MagSafe is primarily there to charge your iPhone. And that’s good: there’s something for everyone! Note that, for most of them, you will also need to purchase a USB-C Power Delivery charger of at least 20 W to power it.
Apple MagSafe charger: the essential base
Apple's basic charger is obviously a safe bet. Combined with a 20 W power supply, it will be able to deliver 15 W. It comes with the USB-C cable.
Apple MagSafe Dual Charger: Travel light
With its rather original wallet format, this double charger stands out from the crowd with its compact side. In addition to offering MagSafe charging for your phone, it is also capable of accommodating an Apple Watch.
Its small size therefore makes it particularly practical for those who are often on the move. Originally sold for 150 euros, these days it is often found around 120 euros.
Mophie 3-in-1 travel charger: for fanboys
Are you a fan of Apple products and do you travel a lot? This charger from Mophie is capable of giving a boost of juice to no less than three devices at the same time. The iPhone in MagSafe, of course, but also the Apple Watch and also the AirPods via a small Qi pad.
All these little people fold into three and can be stored in a fairly practical felt pouch. The latter can indeed accommodate a USB-C cable and a power adapter. To charge all that quickly, it would be better to use a powerful power supply.
Belkin 3-in-1 charging station: ideal for the nightstand
The American Belkin is one of the most prolific manufacturers of Apple accessories. Unsurprisingly, the brand offers several MagSafe charging stands. The one that caught our attention the most is the 3-in-1 model, capable of supporting an iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods.
Unlike most of the models presented here, it is “fixed” and relatively bulky, so don’t plan to move it every four mornings. Perfect for a bedside table, for example, or a desk. If you don't have an Apple Watch, a 2 in 1 version also exists.
The best MagSafe batteries
Apple MagSafe battery: a little boost
The official Apple battery is particularly compact and perfectly suited to an iPhone Mini. This also makes its use strange on larger models, on which it gives the impression of floating a little. While there are no complaints about the build quality, the battery capacity itself leaves a little to be desired.
With only 1460 mAh on the clock, you should not count on a full charge, but rather on a little boost at the end of the day. Note that it has a Lightning connector and can be used as a 15W MagSafe charger when connected to a sufficiently powerful AC adapter. Because of this connector and as the latest iPhones have switched to USB-C, Apple no longer sells this battery, so it will be much more complicated to find.
Anker 622 external battery: the multifunction battery
Anker, which is still present in the external battery market, offers its version of the MagSafe battery, with the Anker 622 magnetic battery, designed for the iPhone 12 and 13.
It houses a nice capacity of 5,000 mAh which allows you to add around ten hours of autonomy – but also makes it more imposing than the official battery. And it has another advantage that the Apple battery does not have: a small kickstand, which allows you to place the phone horizontally or vertically, as desired. Finally, the icing on the cake, it is much cheaper.
The best MagSafe mounts
Beyond charging, MagSafe can also be used to secure a phone to a surface, all without having to add a special case. This function is, however, limited by the power of the magnets, which is not sufficient to hold the phone in place during significant shocks. If you want to install it on a motorcycle or bicycle, you will need to use QuadLock or SP Connect.
Belkin Boost Charge charger: the luxury car holder
Car mounts for smartphones are all over the place, but we must admit that this is one of the scenarios where MagSafe is particularly practical, allowing you to attach your smartphone in just a second. Among the many models available, we particularly like the one from Belkin. It attaches to the ventilation supports on your dashboard. The precise orientation of the phone can be adjusted.
Note that the cable as well as the charger (10 W) are provided. It is compatible with all iPhone 12, 13 and 14 models.
Belkin Fitness Mount: for gym enthusiasts
Signed by Belkin, this support stands out from the crowd. It is in fact designed to be attached to sports equipment (exercise bikes, treadmills, squat cages, etc.). The mounting system itself is simple to use and surprisingly versatile thanks to a ball joint that allows you to point the phone in the desired direction.
An accessory that is certainly a little expensive, but which will delight gym enthusiasts.
Everything you need to know about Apple MagSafe
Which iPhones are MagSafe compatible?
The MagSafe function was introduced with the iPhone 12 in 2020. The entire iPhone 12, 13, 14, 15 range is therefore compatible with MagSafe.
Some AirPods cases are also compatible, specifically third generation AirPods and AirPods Pro.
Is MagSafe Qi compatible?
Yes, the vast majority of MagSafe chargers are compatible with the Qi wireless charging standard. That said, the charging speed is limited and certain chargers, those holding the charger vertically for example, obviously cannot be used with a non-Apple device.
Conversely, a Qi charger can be used to charge an iPhone. Some even offer unofficial magnetic media. While they can “hold” the iPhone, these chargers are slower. 15W charging is in fact reserved for Apple chargers or those holding an official license.
Will my phone be dropped with MagSafe?
Difficult to answer this question categorically, but let's say it straight away: MagSafe does not play in the same category as a QuadLock. The system is designed to easily attach AND remove your phone.
It is therefore very practical for use at home, but it prohibits any scenario where the phone would be subjected to significant shakes or shocks.
Does MagSafe work with a case?
MagSafe will work perfectly with compatible Apple cases. Third-party manufacturers also offer compatible cases, make sure that the word “MagSafe compatible” is there. A magnet is in fact directly integrated into the case, but it is however possible to make a case compatible by attaching a magnetic ring to it. This solution is however not very elegant, we recommend that you buy a suitable shell directly, it will be cheaper and you will make your life easier.
