The European Union has strengthened its control over tech giants by requesting information on measures to counter the risks posed by the spread of generative AI, in particular the growing popularity of deepfakes.
Not long ago, the European Union adopted the “Artificial Intelligence Law”, but its provisions regarding generative AI will come into force only next year, and until then the EU will have to make do with existing acts, including the “Digital Services Act”, DSA). The 27-nation European Commission is concerned about the risks of the spread of AI, such as the persistent misinformation known as “hallucination” and the automated misleading of voters during elections.
The European Commission has requested internal documentation from Google, Facebook✴, TikTok, Microsoft, Instagram✴, Snapchat, YouTube and X (Twitter) on analysis and measures to reduce the risks of the impact of generative AI on people's lives – from elections and the spread of illegal content to gender-based violence and protection minors. European authorities are especially interested in the readiness of companies to combat disinformation on the eve of the European Parliament elections scheduled for early June, namely the sudden appearance of deepfakes of influential individuals. Responses on voter protection issues must be received by April 5, and others by April 26.
The Chinese marketplace AliExpress has also come under scrutiny from the European Commission, which has launched an official investigation to determine whether it sold illegal, harmful or dangerous goods to consumers. “We have and will continue to cooperate with the authorities of relevant countries to fully comply with all legal requirements, including the Digital Services Act (DSA),” AliExpress said.
In addition, the European Commission asked LinkedIn whether the company complies with the DSA's prohibition on targeting advertising on certain important aspects of personal data, such as race, political opinions and sexual orientation.
