We didn't see it coming and yet here he is reaching a new level. The second highest rated game in the world sold 500,000 copies in just 10 days. But where will he stop?
Balatro, the addictive phenomenon of the moment
At first glance, nothing predisposed Balatro to lightning success. Visually, one might believe that it is just another Solitaire type game. And yet, the title is based on a clever concept: a mix of Poker and roguelike. The goal is to make combinations to win as many points as possible, all while using jokers that are, to say the least, original. The whole result is a particularly addictive game sold at a completely reasonable price: €13.99. It is probably the addition of these two points that allowed Balatro to meet his audience, and even to become a real little phenomenon.
It's simple, everything smiles on Balatro. 8 hours after its launch the game had already generated a million dollars in revenue. When we told you about this record, the title recorded an average evaluation of 97% for just under 10,000 reviews. Today, it still receives the same rating but thanks to more than 16,000 reviews. On Metacritic, same observation. The game managed to garner a very good rating of 90 and is even the second highest rated game of the year at the moment. And obviously Balatro is not about to stop there!
Half a million sales
Time passes and the good numbers keep coming. It only took 10 days for Balatro to record 500,000 sales. It was the publisher, Playstack, who announced the news a few days ago. The success story therefore continues and it is all the more beautiful to see that Balatro was developed by one man, LocalThunk. The guy has already expressed in the past his happiness at seeing his game meet such success: “I invested my heart and soul in this game in the hope of sharing it with a few friends and loved ones, but seeing so many people sharing and enjoying this strange creation is incredibly moving.”
No downside for Balatro? The only thing that could have undermined the morale of its creator is the change in PEGI. The game has indeed gone from a PEGI 3 to a PEGI 18. Why? Well because of the presence of imagery linked to the world of betting and casino. As a result, it was less highlighted. But that didn't stop him from getting the sales we know. We can't wait to see how far Balatro will go!
