Netflix does not intend to give Apple TV+ free rein in the science fiction market for much longer. In 2024, the SVOD service with 260 million subscribers will release its most ambitious sci-fi series ever produced. This Netflix Original is supervised by the creators of Game of Thrones, and they had a good reason to join this project.
A very ambitious science fiction series
The 3-Body Problem is one of the most ambitious Netflix Originals of 2024. The streaming platform is banking heavily on its science fiction series to convince subscribers to stay and attract millions of others in the process. To do this, the North American firm has offered itself the services of the creators of the hit series Game of Thrones – David Benioff and DB Weiss – joined by Alexander Woo, and signed a check for 160 million US dollars to realize the vision of its authors.
The result lives up to the expectations placed in such a project. If the series is not unanimously praised by the press (76% on RottenTomatoes), it is praised for its visuals, its intrigue and its propensity to create a certain tension. The 3-Body Problem is the series adaptation of the novel of the same name written in 2006 by Liu Cixin. In fact, the eight episodes of season 1 also draw on the second novel in the literary saga entitled “The Dark Forest” (2008). The “paper” trilogy was completed in 2010 with La Mort immortelle.

A good reason to join Netflix
The marketing campaign around the series The 3-Body Problem is in full swing. The actors and actresses continue interviews, just like the creators of this Netflix Original. David Benioff and DB Weiss, who also took part in interviews, explained to our BBC colleagues the reason why they left the Game of Thrones saga after an epic journey that they themselves describe as “the greatest experience of our lives”. Nonetheless, they wanted to move forward after GoT Season 8 ended.
The HBO series set the bar very high, and the expectations of David Benioff and DB Weiss were just as high. Only a major project could seduce them, and the series adaptation of Liu Cixin's novel had all the required qualities. It represented a major challenge for the showrunners crowned with 59 Emmy Awards with Game of Thrones. The priority for these two creatives can be summed up as follows: not being bored. With The 3-Body Problem, they found what they were looking for.
You go to work every day and you're amazed that you can make a living doing this job – and that's the feeling you're looking for. (…) When choosing a job to which you will dedicate years of your life, you don't want to make the wrong choice – it's quite easy to get bored. -DB Weiss
