Little by little, Baldur's Gate 3 is approaching its first anniversary and the months that pass don't change anything, the title still attracts as many players. The studio has deployed numerous updates, correcting thousands of bugs and even adding content. But some problems remain, and one player recently paid the price.
Baldur's Gate 3: the new triumph of the role-playing game
When we talk about role-playing games, it is It's hard not to think about Dungeons & Dragons. While it's not the first tabletop role-playing game, strictly speaking, D&D is the one that laid the foundations for everything that followed. Video games quickly became interested in this genre, sometimes directly adapting the license. Our favorite media also developed its own codes, but the titles we call C-RPG have never disappeared. We thought they were aimed at a very specific audience, but the year 2023 demonstrated that we could reach a very large number of players. On August 3, Larian Studios officially released its latest game from early access: Baldur's Gate III. Cult license born at BioWare, Baldur's Gate has made a more than noticed returnimmediately attracting hundreds of thousands of players.
In September then in December, the game arrived on PS5 and Xbox Series before winning the game of the year award in numerous ceremonies. Placing us in the shoes of a character infected by a Mind Flayer larva, Baldur's Gate 3 introduces us to vast spaces and hundreds of characters. Players can lead their adventure as they wishwhether by making choices, exploiting all classes, completing a wide variety of quests or exploring.
Extremely rich, Baldur's Gate 3 offers great freedom, opening new paths and possibilities depending on what they decide to do. In this way, it is rare to come across a player who has had exactly the same experience. To offer this field of possibilities to its community, Larian Studios has developed many systems, nested within each other. Obviously, this generated a staggering number of bugs. The most visible are, thanks to many updateswhich have become the least annoying, but there are still many of them and one of them has just cost an 80 hour game.

This player loses his 80 hour game in honor mode due to a dialogue bug
On Reddit, a player named Daxtr0 explains having launched a game in Honor mode, game mode which only allows one save file and requires players to plan their actions as best they can, and to take responsibility for each of their choices. If the main character dies permanently, it is the end of the game and the file is deleted. Honor mode therefore offers a real challenge, and the fear of losing several dozen hours game fundamentally changes the experience. Unfortunately, the player whose story is relayed to us by GamesRadar lost everything due to a persistent bug, which only occurs on rare occasions.
When the conditions are right, this bug overwrites and literally replaces a dialog option with the “continue” option on top. The initial option is still there, but inaccessible and invisible. During an extremely important sequence, the player clicked continue, thinking of continuing his dialogue. In reality, he unknowingly activated an option that ruined everything and caused the death of its main character and precipitated the end of the game. This is how an 80-hour run went up in smoke. If he felt stupid, heite been reassured by other players explaining to him that it was a bug:
Many of you have pointed out that luckily I'm not that stupid, because this is apparently a bug where the “continue” option doesn't show you the actual dialogue options you can choose from. I wasn't even aware of this bug and just thought it was part of the dialog (…). I don't know if it makes me happy or even sadder that this bug occurred at such a crucial point in the game, but alas. I know it's not the end of the world (well, it was for my Tav), but it still sucks, obviously.
Larian plans to release further updates, and you can follow this work joining the Discord server dedicated to Baldur's Gate 3. Various channels have been set up, and you can even suggest improvements or fixes. However, we do not know if the problem linked to dialogues is being corrected or not. Obviously, the choice of transparency made by Larian is paying off: the community seems particularly satisfied to be listened to and to see Larian Studios continue optimization of the game. If the studio continues its usual pattern, Baldur's Gate 3 could be entitled to a definitive edition in the coming years. At present, the developers have neither announced a definitive edition nor added content via an extension.
