PlayStation's new Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is being used for the first time in the PS5 Pro. It is aimed at console games with up to 4K/120 FPS and 8K/60 FPS, as an insider claims to have learned. However, the highest values are not achieved on the PS5 Pro.
After there was hardly any reliable information about the PS5 Pro for months, it has increasingly been leaking onto the Internet for days. This includes information about Number of teraflops, to CPU and system memory.
The Insider Tom Henderson, who was surprisingly often correct with similar rumors in the past, followed up again and reported on Insider Gaming about the desired resolutions and frame rates of the Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). It's PlayStation's own supersampling technology.
Two case studies on PS5 Pro performance
The insider points to two “case studies” for first-party games, whose names are not mentioned. They compare the performance of the base model and the PS5 Pro.
The first title aims for a resolution of 1,800p in Fidelity mode and 60 FPS in Performance mode. A normal PS5 would deliver 1,800p/30 FPS and 1,080p/60 FPS in these modes, while the PS5 Pro reaches 1,440p including PSSR.
Spiel 1
Goal: Image quality similar to Fidelity Mode (1,800p) with Performance Mode FPS (60 FPS).
Standard-PS5:
Performance-Modus: 1.080p bei 60 FPS
Fidelity-Modus: 1.800p bei 30 FPS
PlayStation 5 Pro:
1440p at 60FPS (PSSR used)
The second study takes ray tracing into account, which also leads to a difference: with ray tracing activated, the PS5 Pro can deliver 60 FPS, while the PS5 without ray tracing stays at 60 FPS.
Spiel 2
Goal: Add ray tracing to gameplay.
Standard-PS5:
PlayStation 5 Pro:
It should be noted that these are only case studies and the final tests may turn out differently in practice.

PS6 with 4K and 120 FPS?
Sony has more in mind with the technology used. Henderson reports that Spectral Super Resolution internally targets 4K/120 FPS or 8K/60 FPS.
“The documents, which were provided to Insider Gaming on the condition that they not be made public, describe PlayStation wanting to achieve 4K 120FPS and 8K 60FPS with PSSR,” the insider said.
While these are not intended goals for the PS5 Pro due to hardware limitations, they are the key figures that should be achieved with “future console releases”. This might give us a foretaste of the PS6.
The PS5 Pro PSSR integration currently supports 3840×2160 resolution and is targeting 4K/60FPS and 8K/30FPS. But according to Henderson, it is unclear whether these internal milestones can be achieved.
