The two Assetto Corsa games from Kunos Simulazioni continue to enjoy unbroken popularity among fans of racing sims. Now studio boss Marco Massarutto has commented on the new part.
Assetto Corsa and its spin-off Assetto Corsa Conpetizione from the Italian developer Kunos Simulazioni are undoubtedly among the best racing simulations currently available and that is why there was great joy when it was announced some time ago that a new game was in the works and was originally scheduled for spring 2024 An (apparently outdated) launch window is also already planned.
There is no news about the date, but there is a clear statement about the design of the upcoming game. Accordingly, Assetto Corsa 2 should not be a spin-off like Competizione, but a full sequel to the first game. This was despite the fact that “AC2” had already emerged as a code name for Competizione.
“To cut a long story short: the code name [‘AC2’]”That was given to Competizione was wrong,” Massarutto said in an interview with Overtake. “The new Assetto Corsa will follow on from what we did with Assetto Corsa 1. It's not just a sequel, it's much, much more. It's definitely not a spin-off like Competizione.”
This is at least good news and it seems as if the racing game company does not seem to be affected by the recent layoffs at parent company 505 Games and Digital Bros. Digital Bros had already laid off a large number of staff in the fall and recently closed most of the 505 Games branches in Europe.
It will probably be some time before Assetto Corsa 2 appears, which could be due, among other things, to the fact that there is still DLC coming out for Competizione that brings the Nordschleife into play. The DLC is based on a partnership with SRO Motorsports Group for the Intercontinental GT Challenge series, which brings the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring into the game.
According to the interview, the studio was pretty caught off guard by this partnership. “My reaction was, 'Oh my God, not now, not now,'” says Massarutto, because that really messed up the studio's development schedule. “That was our first reaction, because our work flow follows a schedule and we did not know about the announcement. It was a surprise even for us, although we have been working with the SRO for many years. They wanted to surprise us, and that They did too!”
