Games retailer GOG is expanding its offering and bringing the games from stores to another cloud gaming service, but as usual there is a small catch.
GOG has announced a new partnership with Amazon's cloud gaming service Luna. Said partnership means that in the future you will be able to play games that you have purchased from GOG via streaming on a wide variety of devices from PCs to smartphones or tablets as well as newer smart TVs, all without downloading, apart from the necessary Amazon Luna Client.
All features of the GOG Galaxy client should also be supported, i.e. your cloud saves and achievements will continue to be supported. You are also offered the opportunity to buy games directly from GOG via the Luna client, which then of course end up in your normal library. Keyboard and mouse, Bluetooth game controller or Luna controller are supported when playing.
As you would expect, there is a catch: you can theoretically play all of your titles from the GOG library, but only on the condition that they are also available on Luna. Blockbusters like The Witcher 3 or Cyberpunk 2077 are therefore safe, but for smaller titles it remains to be seen which of them are actually available via the cloud. In addition, no date other than “soon” has been named yet. After all, GOG will launch via the cloud in all countries where Amazon Luna is running.
Titles from the GOG store can currently be played via GeForce NOW, NVIDIA's cloud gaming service. However, similar restrictions apply there, because streaming via the cloud is normally subject to the consent of the respective publisher.
Further information and registration options are available on the official GOG/Luna website. It should also be noted that a paid Amazon Prime or Luna+ subscription is required to use it.
