The iPhone 17 should only be launched next year, but leakers are already sharing possible information about Apple's future generation of high-end cell phones. This Tuesday (19), Chinese informant Instant Digital revealed details about the screen of smartphones in the line that will arrive in 2025.
According to the leaker, the iPhone 17 will have an extremely rigid layer with a finish that reduces reflections. The tipster claims that the material will be “more resistant to scratches than you think”. This component appears to already be in production in China, but it should not be ready in time for the launch of the iPhone 16, which should take place in 2024.
Currently, Apple cell phone screens are protected by a proprietary technology called “Ceramic Shield”. It's a ceramic-infused finish made by Corning — the same company behind Gorilla Glass, widely used in cell phones and tablets from Samsung, Xiaomi and several other brands.
Another technology developed by Corning is Gorilla Armor, which attracts attention by reducing reflections by up to 75% compared to a conventional glass surface. This finish proved its advantages in a comparison we published shortly after the launch of the Galaxy S24 Ultra — the world's first cell phone with this technology.
To remain competitive, Apple must start using similar technologies in its cell phones, and according to the leak, the iPhone 17 could have a front glass with an anti-reflective finish similar to that of the Galaxy S24 Ultra, ensuring better visibility of content in brightly lit environments. .
It's still unclear whether Apple is planning to adopt Gorilla Armor for the iPhone 17, but the description of the technology matches the Chinese leaker's claims. It's also possible that Corning is creating similar technology under another brand for Apple cell phones, just as it did with Ceramic Shield.
