Getting the full potential out of older GPUs is the specialty of modders. One of them is the YouTuber Paulo Gomes, who and his team gave the Radeon RX 5600 XT a memory upgrade. It is a mid-range GPU based on the first RDNA architecture and with a Navi 10 chip that was released at the beginning of 2020, but only has 6 GiBytes of graphics memory on a 192-bit bus.
Upgrade thanks to mod for the Radeon RX 5600 XT
Paulo Gomes has now changed this situation and demonstrates his mod for the Radeon RX 5600 XT in several videos, for which he was ultimately able to unlock 16 GiB of 256 bits. The Brazilian and his team are said to have achieved this by adding a hexadecimal input command to the firmware, which activated the deactivated memory controllers and thus made more memory available. Several configurations were run through with the Radeon RX 5600 XT, including 8 GiB at 256 bits or 12 GiB at 192 bits.

Using a BIOS from Gigabyte resulted in an 11 percent increase in performance in tests, which was primarily due to the increased memory bandwidth. Overclocking measures are said to have resulted in an increase of 29 percent compared to the standard configurations of the Radeon RX 5600 XT. The tests were 1080p extreme tests on Unigine Superposition. Below are the results with different configurations of the Radeon RX 5600 XT.

With these maximum values, the Radeon RX 5600 XT is on a similar level as the Radeon RX 6600 XT based on RDNA 2. Among the current RDNA 3 cards there is also a representative with a memory connection of 192 bits, the Radeon RX 7700 XT, which has not yet been able to exploit its full potential. In the future, this GPU could also become a case for Paulo Gomes and his team.
