On the eve of the release, the psychological horror with survival elements Alone in the Dark, a rethinking of the original trilogy, received the first ratings from journalists. Critics did not agree on the game.
Metacritic has already collected more than a hundred (including all platforms) reviews of Alone in the Dark with an average rating of 63-67%. On OpenCritic the picture is similar – 74 reviews and 62% (with only 40% of recommendations from critics).
Compared to the latest releases in the series, the new Alone in the Dark performed well, but this should not be considered an achievement – the new product managed to overtake the controversial reboot of 2008 and the disastrous Illumination.
Reviewers were pleased with the intriguing mystery at the center of the story, the acting, the thick atmosphere and variety of locations, the jazzy soundtrack and some of the puzzles.
The disadvantages of the project included a clumsy combat system, zero variety of enemies, stealth imposed in one of the sections, minimal difference between playthroughs for different heroes, bugs and performance problems.
Critics admitted that the new Alone in the Dark remained in the shadow of its great predecessors, and was also clearly inferior to remakes of other classic games of the genre (Resident Evil 4, Dead Space) and modern horror films like Alan Wake II.
The release of Alone in the Dark is expected tomorrow, March 20, on PC (Steam, GOG), PS5, Xbox Series X and S. Recently, developers from the Swedish studio Pieces Interactive presented the full system requirements of the game, and IGN showed 14 minutes of gameplay in 4K.
