The technology will not be used in real games yet.
A group of Ubisoft researchers are experimenting with creating NPCs controlled by generative AI. The experiment uses developments from Nvidia and Inworld.
Using the technologies of these companies, Ubisoft developers were able to create non-player characters that can communicate with the player using natural language. The characters' responses are generated by a large language model, which contains knowledge about the game world and other information.
And here's another story
Based on text responses generated by a neural network, first voice acting is generated, and then animations for the characters. As a result, Ubisoft employees say, for the first time they were able to talk with an NPC in much the same way as with a real person.
So far, Ubisoft notes, this is only a prototype: the technology is not planned to be used to create NPCs in the company’s real games. But this may change in the future.
However, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot admits that ultimately generative AI will not have a significant impact on game development. But Ubisoft will still continue to experiment in this direction, in case the technology can change the way games are created.
