The tenth anniversary of League of Legends that was celebrated in 2019 left us with a few announcements of several video games that Riot Games was developing in genres other than its popular MOBA. Since then, little by little they have been seeing the light, such as Legends of Runeterra or Teamfight Tactics, and others are practically finished, such as 2XKO. On the other hand, the one that has remained the most in the shadows has been Project F.
The one who has always been known as the MMO de League of Legends It has completely disappeared since then and it does not seem that the situation will be different in the coming years. More than anything because Marc Merrill, co-founder of Riot Games, has stated through your personal account on X (Twitter) that the team has made the tough decision to restart game development.
Apparently the result that was being obtained was not what was expected, since those responsible considered that they were creating something that was not too far from other titles of the same genre that are already available on the market. For this reason, the project will take a new direction, which means that we will not hear from it again for a few more years:
We know many of you are eager to hear about our MMO project, and we really appreciate your patience and support you've shown us so far. I write this to inform you of where we are. And before anyone panics: yes, we're still working on the game.
After much reflection and discussion, some time ago we decided to change the direction of the project. This decision was not easy, but it was necessary. The initial vision simply wasn't different enough from what you can play today.
We don't think you'd all want an MMO you've played before with a coat of Runeterra paint; To truly do justice to Runeterra's potential and meet the incredibly high expectations of players around the world, we need to make something that truly feels like a significant evolution of the genre.
This is a huge challenge, but one our team of deeply passionate MMO players and video game development veterans are incredibly motivated to pursue.
Restarting development also means that we will be left in the dark for a long time, probably several years. This silence will help provide space for the team to focus on the incredible amount of work ahead. We understand the excitement and anticipation surrounding new information, but we ask that you remain confident during this silent phase. Remember, “no news is good news,” because it means we are working hard, dedicating our hearts and souls to creating something we hope you like.
Therefore, there will be no choice but to continue waiting patiently until in several years we learn something new about this mysterious Project F. Even so, it is also understandable that Riot Games wants to make the best MMO possible considering that the competition in this genre is very tough, with the World of Warcraft, The Elder Scrolls Online or Final Fantasy XIV communities very established.
