Getting 60fps on the GeForce RTX 3070 can be difficult even at 1440p.
Digital Foundry specialists received early access to the PC version of Horizon Forbidden West and spoke about the quality of the port. The first part of Horizon was not very successfully ported to PC at one time, but there are far fewer questions about the Forbidden West port.
When you change settings, the graphics quality changes immediately – there is no need to restart anything. The processor is used for data decompression, not the video card. The developers explain this by the fact that Horizon does not load the processor very much. When the game starts, shaders are compiled, but it’s fast: about a minute on the Ryzen 5 3600. But there are no stutters during gameplay. The PC version of Horizon Forbidden West will receive depth of field in all scenes; on the PlayStation it was only in cutscenes. The port itself looks very good. On PC, even with upscale, it’s easy to get a better picture than on PlayStation 5 in Performance mode. The system requirements promise that the GeForce RTX 3070 will produce 60 fps at 1440p resolution at high settings, but in fact the card produces 50+ fps even in initial locations. Using DLSS you can easily get 60 fps at 1440p on GeForce RTX 2070 Super. On video cards with 8 gigabytes of memory, it is better not to raise the resolution above 1440p – otherwise stuttering may occur after cutscenes or fast movement when the game tries to load the necessary textures. From time to time, the game comes across textures that do not want to fully load. The loading speed on a PC when using a fast drive may well be higher than on the PlayStation 5.
Horizon Forbidden West will be released on PC on March 21, 2024.
