The company agreed to pay the fine and will not appeal.
The French antitrust authority imposed a fine of $270 million on Google. Thus, Google was punished for using articles from French media to train its artificial intelligence.
Representatives of the French regulator concluded that Google did not obtain permission from publications whose materials were used to train AI. Additionally, until September 2023, publications had no way to prevent their content from being used to teach AI.
And here's another story
The size of the fine is partly explained by the fact that Google's actions violated an earlier agreement concluded with the French authorities. Specifically, Google did not provide required information to the monitor appointed as part of the agreement.
According to Google representatives, the fine imposed is disproportionate to the recorded violation. At the same time, the company does not intend to file an appeal.
As Google explains, it was decided to pay the fine and “turn the page” by continuing cooperation with local publications.
