The promising MMO in the League of Legends universe has not been heard of for more than a year and a half and, as it turned out, for good reason. About the current state of the project told Riot Games co-founder Marc Merrill.
Merrill assured that the League of Legends MMO is still in development, but “some time ago” the team made the “difficult decision” to restart production in a different direction.
“The original version was not different enough from modern games. We think you don't want to play a familiar MMO repainted in the colors of Runeterra. To unlock its potential and meet the incredibly high expectations of players around the world, we must contribute to significant evolution of the genre,” Merrill explained.
The team has been laying the groundwork for the restart of development over the past year under the leadership of executive producer Vijay Thakkar, who will now return to his duties as technical director.
The chosen direction of MMO development for League of Legends will be headed by its new executive producer Fabrice Condominas. Merrill called the current situation a serious test, but the team is ready to overcome it.
Restarting development for League of Legends MMO means no news for several more years: “Remember, no news is a good sign. It means we are working hard.”
Merrill concluded by urging players to “trust the silent phase” and thanked fans for their faith in the team and their patience. Riot is “incredibly committed to this mission” and “looks forward” to the adventures and stories ahead with gamers.
