The tests and ratings for “Rise of the Ronin” are here. Is it worth buying or should players wait? Opinions differ considerably.
At 12 p.m. the embargo for tests on the samurai adventure “Rise of the Ronin,” which will be released tomorrow, fell. We also took a look at the title developed by Team Ninja. Our report you read here.
But what does the international press say and what value did the Metascore land at? After more than 80 evaluated tests, a meaningful picture emerges.
Testers disagree
The metascore of “Rise of the Ronin” is currently based on around 90 tests with a value of 76. This means that the PS5 title is just about in the green zone. However, the publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment and the developer Team Ninja had probably hoped for more.
However, the Metascore of 76 does not reflect the opinions of all testers. The range of ratings in the case of “Rise of the Ronin” is quite large and currently ranges from 50 to 95.
PlayStation Universe is particularly impressed and writes in conclusion: “Although Rise of the Ronin seems like a melting pot of influences from other games, it's a real surprise of the year for me so far, as it clearly shows that Team Ninja has a keen sense of compelling open-world design – in a way , which many of his genre colleagues don’t have.”
Sea Dexerto Team Ninja's samurai epic successfully forges a new path by “combining action-packed combat, entertaining traversal mechanics and a lovable cast of characters.” At the same time, players shouldn't expect the pretty graphics of a “Ghost of Tsuhima” or the difficulty levels of a “Sekiro”.
Overloaded maps and bloated systems
Game Rant again says: “It retains many loot-heavy Soulslike characteristics, but redefines itself as an action RPG that cares about its world, characters and player-driven plot. (…) Team Ninja has proven that it can do more than just develop Nioh. And fans who get involved with Rise of the Ronin should really enjoy it.”
The editorial team at IGN is more critical. “Rise of the Ronin” offers a “cool historical setting”, “fair combat and an intelligent RPG design”, which makes the game fascinating, especially with friends. But there are also “overloaded maps, bloated systems and a truly absurd amount of useless loot” that needs to be sorted.
Variety's test comes last in the rating scale. It says: “Rise of the Ronin is a much better game in theory than in practice. It falls short with outdated graphics, hackneyed combat and painfully generic characters.”
The on Test overview provided by Metacritic includes other voices and can be classified as follows:
Positive: 63 percent
Mixed: 36 percent
Negative: 0 percent
In the coming days and weeks, further reviews could be added and cause slight shifts. With around 90 tests so far, the metascore is unlikely to change.
