The legendary prison island, around which there are many myths and stories, is around 8.5 hectares in size, 500 meters long and up to 41 meters high. At the beginning of the 1930s, Alcatraz was converted into a prison island and functioned from 1934 to 1963 as one of the best-known and most notorious high-security prisons in the USA during this era. The prison was closed in 1963 due to high operating costs. Today it serves as a tourist attraction and is a museum memorial site.
