Tim Cook's visit to China will not be limited to meetings with contractors and participation in the opening ceremony of a new Apple brand store in Shanghai. It is expected that he will also take part in the China Development Forum event held by the Chinese authorities, and he will be accompanied by the heads of several American corporations, including AMD, Micron and HP Inc.
The forum will begin its work this weekend; it is considered a response by the Chinese authorities to the November meeting of American businessmen and Chinese officials, which took place last year in the United States. Then, for the right to take part in a business lunch with Chinese President Xi Jinping, entrepreneurs shelled out $40,000 per person, as The Wall Street Journal clarifies. The Chinese event also involves a similar meeting, but sources do not say anything about the conditions for participation in it. Xi Jinping himself will take part in the forum next Wednesday, so it is not certain that he will meet with Tim Cook, but other American businessmen may try to do so. Xi Jinping may pull out of the event at the last minute, sources said.
US forum participants will begin arriving in Beijing this weekend. The main agenda will be considered during the first two days of the event, which will begin on Sunday. Issues related to China's economic growth, artificial intelligence and climate change will be discussed. In total, the event will be attended by 85 executives from various companies, and the American delegation will be the most representative with 34 participants. Last year, only 23 representatives of large American businesses appeared at a similar event.
In addition to companies in the technology sector (Apple, AMD, Micron Technology and HP Inc), US food and drug manufacturers, investment and financial sector companies, as well as energy giant Exxon Mobil will send their executives to the forum in China. Apart from last year's business lunch in San Francisco, the last time major American business representatives met with Xi Jinping was in June 2018.
