Cypriot studio with Russian roots Nekki (mobile series Shadow Fight, Vector) presented a new gameplay trailer for the cyberpunk action game Spine on Unreal Engine 5. The video was shown as part of the Future Games Show: Spring Showcase 2024 event.
The new trailer showed longer excerpts of gameplay than the December one, which mainly included fragments of story scenes. The authors showed close combat techniques, the use of firearms (the heroine knows how to take them away from opponents) and elements of the environment.
The video made a mixed impression on users. On the one hand, many praised the idea of creating “Sifu with guns” and “a female version of John Wick”, as well as the quality of the animations. On the other hand, the players did not like the too low dynamics (the characters move “as if in jelly”).
One way or another, it’s worth considering that the trailer shows an early version of the game.
Spine takes place in a cyberpunk city controlled by artificial intelligence Tensor. As street artist Redline with the sentient combat implant Spine, players will challenge the “autocratic AI regime” and join the street fights. The heroine will be involved in a global conflict of powerful factions, but she also has personal motives related to “revenge on the system.”
The developers attribute their action to the gun fu genre and admit that they are inspired by Sifu, Marvel's Spider-Man, the films “John Wick”, “The Matrix”, “Equilibrium” and the paintings of John Woo. Players also noted similarities to 2001's Oni from Bungie West, 2013's Remember Me from Dontnod Entertainment, and even Batman Arkham (“If Batman Arkham was a truly cool shooter,” is how one user described it).
The authors promise an exciting combination of cinematic shootouts and beat 'em ups, many references to cult action films and spectacular scenes with realistic animations and unique fight choreography, in which film industry professionals participate. “Every second” of an action movie will look like a scene from an expensive blockbuster. There are no plans to support multiplayer, although Spine was originally created as a multiplayer game.
Spine will be released in 2025 on PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S. A text translation into Russian has been announced. Recommended system requirements include an Intel Core i7-8700 processor, 16 GB of RAM and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 graphics card.
