Departing from an RPG genre that several years ago was considered something niche to become a mainstream success that stole the hearts of millions of gamers around the world, what Larian Studios managed to achieve can be called a “miracle” with Baldur's Gate 3. It doesn't stop there, it also continues to gain award after award from various directions, calling it the best game in 2023 which incidentally has fierce competition. Rationally, this should encourage Larian Studios – the dev. to further exploit Baldur's Gate 3. But apparently oh it turns out, they are already “done” with it.
At the Game Developers Conference (GDC), Larian Studios boss Swen Vincke appeared with a quite extreme statement. He emphasized that currently Larian has absolutely no plans to develop DLC or expansions for Baldur's Gate 3 or even the continuation series – Baldur's Gate 4. Vincke stated that Larian is ready to move completely from the world of Dungeon & Dragons to create something completely new . Speaking to IGN, he also said that this new project is not a new series for their RPG game – Divinity: Original Sin. There's no further information about what this game will be, but Vincke assures it will feel “familiar”.
Larian is not interested in developing an expansion for Baldur's Gate 3 or continuing it with Baldur's Gate 4.
With Larian's departure from the Dungeon & Dragons franchise, it is not impossible that there are other developers out there who are confident enough to make Baldur's Gate 4 in the future. But will it be as good as what Larian has produced in the third series? Let's just wait.
