One of the most popular features of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is fast travel, which surprised the speed with which it happens: it only takes a second and a little more to fast travel in Marvel's Spider-Man 2. But the acclaimed feature has risked not being implemented in the full game.
During GDC 2024 il Design Director Joshua Benavidez in fact he told a background story on the development of rapid travel and the difficulties initially encountered by Insomniac Games in inserting it into the last one Marvel’s Spider-Man per PlayStation 5. “We were working on this new fast travel thing, which was one of my favorite new features, but at the same time it totally broke the game,” Benavidez explains. Insomniac's main concern was that fast travel as sophisticated as the one seen in the final game would push fans to use it consistently also due to the large size of the Marvel's Spider-Man 2 map, designed to encourage exploration among numerous collectible activities and random events to discover.
“Fast travel was proving to be so bad that at one point we even considered canceling it or delaying its unlock until players finished the game. But in the end I realized that travel wasn't the problem quick, but it was instead the structure of the game itself,” Benavidez added. Insomniac therefore took back the design of the map and reworked it in order to push players to explore every corner of New York even with the presence of the fast trailer, eventually implemented in the definitive version.
Still speaking of features, last March 7th Insomniac added New Game Plus to Marvel's Spider-Man 2, thus allowing players to finally start the adventure again without losing all the progress previously recorded.
