“Rise of the Ronin” is not one of the hardest games in the genre. But according to game director Fumihiko Yasuda, players can expect tougher challenges. They will follow at a later point in the game's progress.
“Rise of the Ronin” was released today and has been rotating in the drives of many PS5 consoles for hours. The embargo for tests fell shortly before the launch. Based on about 100 ratings, the adventure comes from Team Ninja to a metascore of 76.
It's not an outstanding value. Buyers don't have to worry about bad play either. One of the points of criticism is based on the challenges in “Rise of the Ronin”, which were often described as too shallow compared to other games of this type.
By the endgame at the latest, the challenge should increase even for hard-core players.
Fun experience for a “wide range”
While the team focused on providing a fun experience for “a wide range of players,” they didn't want to neglect those looking for greater challenges.
During an interview with IGN Game director Fumihiko Yasuda began by emphasizing that the Twilight difficulty level will challenge players just as much as Team Ninja's previous games.
“The game's Hard difficulty level is chosen to provide a similar experience to our previous titles in terms of the difficulty of the battles,” he said.
Challenging post-game content
Furthermore, “Rise of the Ronin” players can look forward to additional content and challenges after completing the main story.
“There is also post-game content that is challenging for players to enjoy as well,” Yasuda explained.
The difficulty levels at a glance:
Dawn (easy): In story mode, players take little damage, deal a lot, and have very long windows for saves.
Dusk (normal): Challenging level that requires more precise reactions.
Twilight (hard): Hard level of difficulty, about the same level as its predecessors.
Midnight (even harder): Unlocked after completing the storyline and allows you to return to areas you have already visited. Endgame challenges and additional abilities await players here.
Players have to find their own combination
Yasuda also pointed out that there are many fighting styles in “Rise of the Ronin,” but certain weapons have an affinity for certain types. It is up to the player to identify and judge which affinities work well, so that a well-working strategy can be chosen from the multitude of options available.
“Rise of the Ronin” was launched today, March 22, 2024, exclusively for the PS5. The title performed well in our test. However, Olaf highlights many criticisms, some of which may be improved in the future.
