Emad Mostak left the company following key researchers.
The startup Stability AI, which is developing the neural network generator Stable Diffusion, has left its founder and director Emad Mostak. In addition to the post of chief executive officer, Mostak left his position as a member of the company's board of directors.
Christian Laforte, the startup's chief technology officer, and Shan Shan Wong, the company's chief operating officer, became interim executive directors of Stability AI.
Mostak left the company to pursue “decentralized AI,” according to a statement from Stability AI. Emad himself did not explain what he was talking about, but noted that he is confident that he is leaving Stability AI in good hands.
Mostak left Stability AI shortly after the departure of a number of key research employees whose work underpinned Stable Diffusion.
According to Forbes, Stability AI has recently been experiencing financial problems and is having difficulty attracting investment. The company's management allegedly offered Mostak to resign, but he, sources say, did not want to leave.
For many months, Stability AI products are believed to have been earning less than the company was spending. It is not yet entirely clear how the startup’s new management intends to turn the situation around.
