The founder and head of Stability AI, Emad Mostaque, left his positions as CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the company. The startup will be temporarily led by Chief Operating Officer Shan Shan Wong and CTO Christian Laforte.
Emad Mostak's decision to leave his position explained desire to engage in decentralized projects in the field of artificial intelligence. In his opinion, it is impossible to defeat “centralized AI” with even more “centralized AI” – this is how he characterized the structures of the leading startups in the industry, primarily OpenAI and Anthropic. Mostak added that the decision to leave the leadership position was his. “We must have more transparent and distributed governance in the field of AI, because it is becoming more important. It's a difficult problem, but I think we can solve it. <..> The concentration of power in AI hurts us all. I decided to leave to fix this at Stability and other places,” he said.
Just a year ago, it seemed that Emad Mostak did not consider income growth a priority. He called the profit focus of generative AI companies strange and cited the example of MagicLeap, which spent billions before reaching profitability. But this year the financial issue has become more acute. “We are doing well, we are already ahead of forecasts this year. Our goal is to be cash flow positive this year, I think we can get there sooner rather than later,” he wrote on Reddit.
“The market is huge and open models will be needed for edge (computing) and all regulated industries. That's why we are one of the few companies that open-source the data, code, training details, and more. Custom models, consulting and more – huge markets and very reasonable business models; approximately next year we will enter corporate implementation, and last year we were just conducting tests,” said Emad Mostak.
