WhatsApp is working on introducing some new features that use artificial intelligence to edit images. These tools first appeared in September and have now appeared again in the latest beta version of the platform for Android.
Artificial intelligence will do this wonder for WhatsApp!
The tools were discovered during a code analysis by TheSPAndroid's @AssembleDebug on version 2.24.7.13 of the WhatsApp beta app for Android, revealing a variety of advanced editing options for users to easily enhance their photos. These options are not yet available to users, but have been enabled with some code adjustments. Among them are:
Background: The AI will generate your ideal background based on what you describe and replace it for you. Restyle: Adds an artistic touch to your images by applying AI-generated filters and styles. Expand: This feature is believed to enlarge the background of your image, intelligently filling in the gaps.
These tools will supposedly coexist with well-known functions, such as cropping and stickers in the current WhatsApp image editor, under the “glow” icon.
This news follows announcements from Meta (WhatsApp's parent company) of similar AI editing functions for Instagram and Facebook.
WhatsApp following these steps signals the company's intention to bring these advanced tools to its entire Meta product user base.
Not surprisingly, similar AI-driven functions like background expansion already exist in established tools like Adobe Photoshop. However, although these existing competing products offer these tools, they are definitely far from perfect. This is even though they are getting better and better as time progresses and technology becomes more advanced. This puts pressure on WhatsApp to deliver an intuitive and impressive user experience.
However, it appears that these features are still in the early development phase and may not appear in the stable version of the application for some time. This means we'll have to wait a little longer to see exactly how AI will play a role in the way users edit and share photos on WhatsApp.
