Dragonflight was unable to completely correct the matter.
At the Game Developers Conference, World of Warcraft developers discussed the game's 30-year history. During the presentation, Blizzard employees spoke separately about the last decade of World of Warcraft and the change in the number of subscribers to the game.
Typically, World of Warcraft subscriber numbers increase when an expansion is released, and then gradually decrease until new content is released. Blizzard's goal is to ensure that the game's audience grows over time, not falls.
The developers admit that problems have arisen with this. After the release of the Shadowlands expansion, World of Warcraft began to experience a strong outflow of audience: the number of subscribers fell much more than expected.
The Shadowlands add-on, the company admits, turned out to be a failure: the number of subscribers dropped to 2019 levels. To remedy the situation, the company intensified the launch of classic servers and finalized the Dragonflight add-on.
The change in strategy helped. Although the release of Dragonflight did not lead to a record increase in the number of players (the number of subscribers was lower than at the release of Shadowlands), after the release the decline in audience was not as severe as before, and then subscriptions began to grow.
Blizzard believes that they have been able to restore the trust of the World of Warcraft community. The company is currently working on three major expansions, the first of which, The War Within, will be released in 2024.
