The performance of “Dragon's Dogma 2” is part of an analysis by Digital Foundry. Up to 20 FPS is possible on the lower scale. But which console does better?
Capcom has for “Dragon’s Dogma 2” announced a first patch that fixes some launch problems. Some of the planned changes affects the frame ratewhich can be locked to a maximum of 30 FPS in the console version after installing the update.
Players shouldn't expect major framerate improvements with the upcoming update for “Dragon's Dogma 2”. They will follow in a later patch.
However, the latest analysis from Digital Foundry showed that the Capcom title released last week needs performance improvements based on meaningful measurement results.
Frame rate drops down to 20 FPS
According to Digital Foundry, “Dragon's Dogma 2” performance is “not good” and “needs improvement,” which the publication backs up with some numbers.
The frame rates on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S were generally 30 to 45 frames per second in the tests. However, there were significant drops in certain areas, which resulted in “stuttering and inconsistent output” in “Dragon's Dogma 2”.
Based on this, Digital Foundry would like to have an option that can limit the frame rate on consoles to 30 FPS, which – as already noted – is planned for an upcoming update:
In urban areas and during a fight, the frame rate of “Dragon's Dogma 2” can even drop to 20 FPS, even if Capcom tries to tame the CPU load through certain mechanics.
“Capcom is taking some notable steps to reduce CPU usage, such as limiting NPCs to a comically short distance from the player,” said Digital Foundry.
But that is still not enough to “achieve a decent frame rate” and “Capcom should address this problem”.
Which console handles Dragon's Dogma 2 better?
While “Dragon's Dogma 2” needs improvements on both consoles, there are minor differences in terms of performance.
In GPU-heavy regions such as open-world sections, the Xbox Series However, according to Digital Foundry, the values are not fully comparable because there is a texture problem in the Xbox version. Occasionally “important high-resolution textures do not load.”
While the GPU performance ultimately favored the Xbox Series
Here the Xbox console can at least score points with LFC (Low Frame Rate Compensation). This makes the game look relatively smoother. “But the urban areas are again below average, with a lot of frame variations that are not tamed by the variable refresh rate,” it says about general performance.
