The Cyan Games studio is currently working on a remake of Riven, which was the successor to the popular puzzle adventure Myst. The development was announced at the end of 2022. The new title is a completely new development and certainly offers some highlights for fans of the older titles.
Freely accessible world
The Riven remake uses Unreal Engine 5 and the game world should be freely accessible in 3D for the first time. In addition to a standard version, the new title should also be easy to play with VR glasses. In recent years, Cyan Studios has already made sure that fans of virtual reality can also enjoy their own titles.
Back in 2010, fans began independently developing a remake of the original Riven. Under the title Starry Expanse, this caught the attention of the developers at Cyan Games and the players in question were invited to their own studio in 2019.
Created from a fan project
After the visit, the hobby developers handed Starry Expanse over to the development studio so that they could build on their work. In a blog post at the time, fans shared their excitement about this move. A player responsible for the project even switched to Cyan Games in order to continue working on the title.
According to Cyan Games, they have been thinking about developing a modern remake of Riven for a long time. However, the resources of a small studio are very limited. This could be a hindrance if you want to implement certain requirements during development. “Riven is one of the most respected games in Cyan history,” said Cyan Games according to golem.de. “We wanted to make sure we could take on such a difficult, expensive and complicated undertaking – and do it well.”

High immersion promised
“This version of Riven is intended to be both an homage to its roots and a leap into the future of interactive storytelling,” Cyan Games said in a press release. “By leveraging modern technology and the power of Unreal Engine 5, Cyan Worlds aims to replicate and expand its vision for Riven, with a development focus on delivering native experiences on both flat screen and VR platforms. The game will be a provide unprecedented levels of immersion.”
The Riven remake is scheduled to release later this year. Players of the predecessors can look forward to some highlights, such as walkable areas that could not previously be explored. In addition to this game, Cyan Games is working on another adventure with Firmament.
