On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the legendary role-playing game series, Bethesda Softworks gave us a small status update on “The Elder Scrolls 6”. According to the publisher, the first playable builds now exist. However, patience is still required.
Since then, official announcement “The Elder Scrolls 6” at E3 2018 took almost six years. Apart from the fact that Bethesda Softworks is working on the role-playing game, no concrete details have been given so far.
This week the developers are not only celebrating the 30th anniversary of “The Elder Scrolls” series. At the same time, Bethesda Softworks used the anniversary to give us a new sign of life for “The Elder Scrolls 6”. As the publisher announced, the team responsible successfully completed initial tests and now has early playable builds of the fantasy RPG.
“And last but not least: Yes, we are busy developing the next chapter: The Elder Scrolls 6. Even when we return to Tamriel and play early builds, we feel the same joy, excitement and sense of adventure,” Bethesda Softworks commented on the work on the offshoot announced in 2018.
It remains unclear when the official unveiling of “The Elder Scrolls 6” can be expected. However, we shouldn't expect any tangible details or first game scenes in the foreseeable future. As a document from the FTC's legal dispute against Microsoft that became public last year made clear, Microsoft does not expect the ambitious project to be released until 2026 at the earliest.
“The Elder Scrolls 6” may be a little longer coming. This is what Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer said last year as follows: “The same team is also working on Starfield, which is coming out in September. So we’re talking about a game that’s at least five years away.”
A statement that suggests that “The Elder Scrolls 6” could not appear until 2028. The focus of the responsible developers at Bethesda Game Studios is currently on post-launch support for the sci-fi role-playing game “Starfield”, which will be released in September 2023 for the PC and Xbox Series X/S.
There is still uncertainty regarding a possible implementation for the PlayStation systems. In the document mentioned there was an older statement from Phil Spencer in which “The Elder Scrolls 6” was for a PC and Xbox-exclusive release was confirmed. However, Spencer pointed out relatively quickly in an interview that Microsoft had not yet made a decision regarding possible exclusivity.
According to Spencer, “The Elder Scrolls 6” is still so far away that it is currently unclear for which platforms the role-playing game will ultimately be released. At the same time, Microsoft's gaming CEO once again emphasized that his company decides on exclusivity for upcoming games on a case-by-case basis.
Other leading figures at Microsoft have also recently fueled rumors about possible multiplatform releases of Xbox titles. For example, Xbox President Sarah Bond put it last month the goal“Making Xbox the largest publisher of video games across platforms.”
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella sounded a similar note in January 2024 following words: “But we were number three, number four. And now, with Activision, I think we have a chance to be a good publisher – quite frankly – for Sony and Nintendo and PC and Xbox.”
