When it was first introduced to the public, one of the attractions that Blizzard wanted to push and make it different from the first series was the PvE mode. There are plans to treat it as a serious separate mode, even with a different progression system as well. However, this plan was confirmed to be canceled with crumbs of PvE content then being offered in the form of Story Missions which were also available in a paid format. Early on, there were indications that Blizzard was interested in continuing this strategy, by spawning more PvE missions. But unfortunately, that is no longer the case.
Blizzard is reportedly no longer interested in exploring PvE content for Overwatch 2, as reported by Jason Schreier. The reason is clear, because the three PvE mission content that they offered for USD 15 in 2023 ended up not being successful and selling. Even the team responsible for this PvE content was largely laid off when the reconstruction process occurred within Blizzard some time ago. Bloomberg also reported that this failure resulted in the Overwatch team not getting additional bonuses like in previous years.
The failure of previous content has reportedly caused the Overwatch 2 team to stop the process of creating more PvE mission content.
With the “death” of PvE content, the Overwatch 2 team will focus on perfecting the PvP mode which is now back to being the sole focus. What do you think of this situation?
