Apricorn, a company specializing in the production of USB drives with hardware 256-bit AES XTS encryption, announced the release of the Aegis Padlock DT and its brother Padlock DT FIPS, which complies with US government standards. According to CDR Labs, the company was the first to introduce a 24 TB model to the market. New products will be useful in healthcare, the financial sector, education, and government services.
This is the third time the company has released industry-record USB drives with hardware encryption; previously it was about 20 and 22 TB variants. Padlock DT (FIPS) uses proprietary AegisWare firmware. It has an integrated keypad that allows you to enter a PIN code for (un)locking. The authentication and encryption process is carried out by the device itself. That is, the drive does not use any additional software on the computer to which it is connected. There is also no way to update or modify the drive's firmware.
To connect to a PC, the USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-B interface (5 Gbps) is used. An external 12 V power supply is required for power. The device weighs more than 1.2 kg with dimensions of 18 × 28 × 5.9 cm. It is covered by a limited warranty for a period of 3 years. The drives are approved by the US Federal Communications Commission and are also certified for use in the European Union. Both drive options are compatible with Windows, macOS and Linux.
The cost of the Aegis Padlock DT with a capacity of 24 TB is about $1400, the FIPS version is slightly more expensive than the regular one. The manufacturer recalls that every year more and more information is generated, and the number of cyber threats is also growing, so saving backup copies of data offline is also very important, and Apricorn, according to her, is the only one who offers such capacious USB drives with the ability to hardware data encryption.
