In the space simulation genre, the classic Star Wars: TIE Fighter from 1995 is still the benchmark for intense and exciting space battles. The upcoming space sim strategy called Remnant Protocol, which is scheduled to appear on Steam in 2024, aims to weave the intensity of space dog fights with XCOM-branded management gameplay.
Remnant Protocol: A rebellion against the Empire in the style of TIE Fighter and XCOM
Progenitor Game Studios is behind Remnant Protocol. At GDC, website PCGamesN spoke to Scott McCallum, the studio's CEO, about the new project. McCallum describes the title as “TIE Fighter meets XCOM” and states: “The goal is to capture the feel of classic sci-fi, the hero story – to make someone want to be Luke Skywalker.”

In Remnant Protocol, the player is actually supposed to lead a galactic rebellion against an evil empire in campaigns that are played out on a strategy level. The player builds ships, manages resources, researches new technologies, carries out espionage and expands shipyards and hangars. “So the goal is to overthrow the Empire, but you start as a grassroots guerrilla and really get that Star Wars feel from 'A New Hope' to 'The Empire Strikes Back' to 'Return of the Jedi “Knight,” explains McCallum. McCallum also cites the classic 4X game Star Wars Rebellion as further inspiration: “I couldn't get enough of sending Luke Skywalker and Han Solo on missions, and then the actual fleet battles – for me it was the perfect game. So I'll take it “That and just make it more dynamic by putting you in the cockpit, because I've always loved flight simulators like TIE Fighter too.”
As soon as a mission starts, the player does not see an isometric strategy map in the style of XCOM, but rather slips into the role of a space fighter pilot at the front. Similar to XCOM, pilots have individual names, personalities and skills and are lost forever if they die in battle. This permadeath approach is intended to create excitement. “I like games where my decisions make or break the difference,” said McCallum. The release of Remnant Protocol is planned for the current year 2024. The team also wants to support the game in VR.
