Il joypad it is a fundamental tool for any gamer and over the years many models have arrived, aesthetically refined and equipped with increasingly cutting-edge features. But who invented the most modern version of controllers?
They were the ones who designed this device Alan Kotok e Robert Alan Saunders: two computer scientists graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) who distinguished themselves during the early 1960s for having contributed to a virtuous innovation in the videogame field. At the time, in fact, video games had existed for some time, but they were very inconvenient to play as they were controlled using buttons positioned near the screen. In order to make the experience more enjoyable, Kotok and Saunders – one of the main creators of Spacewar! – they decided to revolutionize the control system: they therefore created a sort of remote control equipped with all the levers necessary to play Spacewar!, which was connected to the device via a wire. In this way, it was also possible to connect two identical devices to the same television to ensure that as many users could play together, without getting in each other's way.
Thus it was that the first gamepad model was born which then, over the years, underwent countless evolutions up to its most recent expressions such as the DualSense of PlayStation 5, which in addition to being wireless is equipped with bright LEDs, rechargeable battery, microphone, speaker, haptic feedback and mechanical triggers.
