The Xbox could potentially face difficult times. Apparently some publishers are now thinking about whether it is even worth continuing to support Microsoft consoles.
Who in the last few months? Hardware Sales Observed in Europe, you may have noticed that the Xbox consoles are on the decline. Due to these developments, some publishers are now asking themselves whether supporting the Xbox would still be worthwhile. At least this is what a current podcast from GamesIndustry.biz close, in which our colleague Christopher Dring comments on exactly this matter.
Dring says what he took away from this year's Game Developer Conference (GDC) was that Xbox as a hardware manufacturer was in “real trouble.”
“I don’t know why we bothered to support them”
In addition, he has heard from two companies, one larger and one not so large, “that the performance of the Xbox in Europe is simply stagnating. (…) You can follow our monthly gaming market reporting and see that Xbox sales have been declining throughout last year and even more so this year,” Dring continues. Events that would make some publishers think.
Apparently, various publishers are now thinking about whether it is still worth continuing to support the Xbox consoles. Christopher Dring was told by a “big company” that launched “a big game” last year: “I don’t know why we bothered to support them.”
Could new Xbox hardware be a game-changer? An Xbox handheld is apparently in the works:
Dring and his colleagues had already mentioned in an earlier podcast that some dealers in Europe would reduce their Xbox offering, both hardware and software. However, there are now also third-party providers who say:
“We put a lot of effort into developing a Series S version and a (Series) X version of a game, although to be honest the market for us is PC and PS5.”
Could the majority of Xbox exclusives come to PlayStation?
But that wasn't all, because in the same GamesIndustry.biz podcast, Christoper Dring also discusses the possible future of Xbox exclusives. As is well known, a small tremor went through the gaming landscape a few weeks ago when Microsoft confirmed the release of some titles that had previously been exclusive to Xbox consoles on the PlayStation. But what if? „Hi-Fi Rush““Sea of Thieves” & Co. would have only been the beginning?
“As far as I know, most (Xbox first-party games) will appear (for the PS5) at some point, assuming it develops the way Xbox thinks it is likely.” Closely related to this is his view that Microsoft Xbox division would have problems as a hardware manufacturer.
The fact that Microsoft is at least thinking about bringing various Xbox exclusives to PlayStation systems is consistent with various reports in recent months. Various well-known insiders said that consideration was being given to bringing even major exclusive games such as the sci-fi epic “Starfield” or the upcoming action-adventure “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” to the competing platform.
Even Xbox flagships like that „Halo“-Franchise or the “Gears of War” series are said to have been the subject of these considerations at least temporarily. Officially, however, Microsoft has no plans to release any further major Xbox exclusives on PlayStation.
What are your thoughts on the comments surrounding continued Xbox support?
