Hardly a week goes by without PCGH reporting on mass layoffs or takeovers. Now there is fresh news about the traditional company Sega.
Relic and Sega are separating after ten years
Sega has a long and varied history and was founded in 1960. There were layoffs as early as 2023, at the developer studio Relic Entertainment, which was taken over by Sega in January 2013 after THQ went bankrupt. And Relic is now also available on March 28th. is making headlines: After almost ten years under the Sega umbrella, they are embarking on the path to independence together with an external investor. The independence is a “big step” for the developer.
Relic assures that they want to continue to provide their current game, the RTS Company of Heroes 3, with updates. Update 1.6 is due in April. CoH3 was released on February 23rd, 2023 and has not yet met the expectations of fans. Despite many patches, long-term approval on Steam is a meager 53 percent. This is probably one of the reasons why Sega and Relic are now going their separate ways.
Speaking of Sega: Although various employees are leaving the company with the departure of Relic, that is still not enough. As Eurogamer reports, citing an internal email, 240 employees will have to leave Sega. Sega Europe, the British Total War developer Creative Assembly and Hardlight are particularly affected by this. Creative Assembly recently had to cope with the discontinuation of the live service shooter Hyenas. But the current Total War projects are also in crisis, especially TW Pharaoh, for which a partial refund was even offered.
The question may be how Relic continues. The RTS specialist is known for series such as Company of Heroes or Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War. Relic also played a leading role in Age of Empires 4. It is not yet known which brands Relic is allowed to cultivate. But one can assume that Relic is not taking the path to independence without good reason and a solid plan.
