Many times Stellar Blade has been talked about as a Korean NieR Automata, but is it really like that? After trying the Stellar Blade demo and interviewing the development team, we can give you a more concrete answer supported by some statements from the development team.
Stellar Blade looks like NieR Automata
We recently interviewed Hyung-Tae Kim (Director) and Dong-Gi Lee (Technical Director) of Shift Up and on this occasion it was Hyung-Tae Kim who clarified:
“It's undeniable that NieR Automata influenced the birth and development of Stellar Blade. In a way, that's what drove us to want to create Stellar Blade.”
As is later clarified, however, there are many differencesfrom the story to the gameplay and in particular the combat system is really very different from that of Yoko Taro's cult game.
So no, Stellar Blade is not the Korean NieR Automata and although the Square Enix game partly inspired the development team, the two games have radical differences related to the combat system and gameplay in general. The aesthetics are certainly different too but it is worth reiterating that Stellar Blade and NieR Automata are still different games, each with its own precise identity.
