Those: Marvel
March 28th, 2024 at 5:00 p.m. – As if out of nowhere, Marvel and Disney announced a new team shooter. Marvel Rivals is supposed to take over from Overwatch 2 because it almost looks like a copy with other heroes.
Just when you think that Marvel and Disney would finally get the hang of things and have learned from their mistakes with movies and series, they suddenly come around the corner with Marvel Rivals. After the incredible flop Marvel's Avengers a few years ago, those responsible at Marvel and Disney are now trying a new game: Marvel Rivals.
This is one Team shooter in the style of Overwatch and Co. Only instead of Mercy, Tracer and the like, you compete against each other with the heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The idea is actually not bad at all. But the first trailer already shows impressively that it currently looks more like a brazenly copied Overwatch.

“Overwatch 3?” – almost seems like that
Marvel Rivals will be a classic 6v6 team shooter. Each hero has a few different attacks and there are ranged fighters, melee fighters and also different roles. Plus an ultimate that slowly charges up and then has an immense influence on the field.
Even the heroes themselves are reminiscent of Overwatch. Iron Man is not much more than Pharah and the Hulk is Winston's equal. Even the graphic style and interface could come directly from the Overwatch developers.

Marvel Rivals: New team shooter in announcement trailer
Does this make Marvel Rivals a bad game? Certainly not. If those in charge at Marvel and Disney can manage to combine the fun of Overwatch with the notoriety of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and less aggressive monetization, Marvel Rivals could certainly be a huge success.
However, the first pictures look more like they wanted to develop something quickly and simply in order to earn a lot of money. But at least improvements compared to Overwatch have already been announced. For example, the trailer talks about “Team Up Activated” – a kind of team combo that brings bonus effects. Many Overwatch players have wanted something like this for a long time. Marvel Rivals also shines with destructible environments. There is a lot of potential here too.
If the developers put a little more love into this, Marvel Rivals could be exactly what Overwatch fans hoped for from the second part – an Overwatch 3, so to speak.
It remains to be seen whether Marvel Rivals can be a success. This certainly depends on the fun of the games. With all the Marvel and Disney fame behind us, it shouldn't be difficult to at least lure many players in – provided it's a Free2Play game.
