Gearbox Entertainment was acquired by Embracer Group in 2021, an acquisition that cost the company $363 million. The holding decided to sell Gearbox as part of a restructuring program.
Take-Two expects that the purchase of Gearbox Entertainment will “strengthen” its relationship with the company. Together with Gearbox, the holding received the rights to Borderlands, Homeworld, Brothers in Arms and other franchises of the company.
Simultaneously with the announcement of the purchase, Take-Two announced that a new part of Borderlands was in development. Previously, the existence of the next part of the franchise was not reported.
Take-Two will consider investing in franchises purchased with Gearbox. The company is currently working on six games, including five sequels. Two of them are the new parts of Borderlands and Homeworld.
The transaction is expected to be finalized by June 30, 2024.
