After the triumph of “Oppenheimer” at the current Oscars, the British King Charles III approved a knighthood for Christopher Nolan. The director's wife, producer Emma Thomas, will be initiated into the ladies, writes Variety.
Netflix chief Ted Sarandos, meanwhile, will be named Commander of the Order of the British Empire for services to the creative industries, one of the highest honors that can be awarded in the UK (Nolan has also had this honor since 2019). Traditionally, the awards are presented in person by a senior member of the royal family during the investiture ceremony.
Christopher Nolan won his first Oscar for directing the biopic about Robert Oppenheimer, the creator of the first atomic bomb. Overall, Oppenheimer received 13 nominations and won 7 awards, including Best Picture.
Prior to this, Nolan was nominated 8 times in different categories – for the films “Memento” and “Dunkirk” in particular. In collaboration with his producer wife, he produced all the major films – Inception, Interstellar, The Dark Knight, Batman Begins and Tenet. They also founded and run their own production company, Syncopy.
Earlier it became known that the director earned $100 million from Oppenheimer.
Sarandos joined Netflix in 2000 and has been in charge of content since then, most notably launching the Emmy Award-winning series The Crown. He was promoted to chief executive in 2020, sharing the role with Greg Peters, who previously served as chief operating officer and chief product officer.
