China’s Z.ai plans to soon update its flagship artificial intelligence model, adding to its line of open products that are direct competitors to US-based Anthropic and OpenAI. The new GLM-5.3 will provide improved coding capabilities, helping it close the gap with established leaders including Anthropic Fable 5.

The company Z.ai (also known as Zhipu) is rapidly improving the project: GLM-5.3 will have a scale of about 700 billion parameters, the same as its predecessor released in June. Within two weeks, the developers plan to publish the model’s weights so that everyone can use it. Posted by Z.ai Test resultsshowing that the new model will be much better than the known GLM-5.2, and in multiple tests it will be able to be close to or even better than Fable 5.

OpenAI and Anthropic Labs are considered world leaders in artificial intelligence, but Chinese companies are increasingly demonstrating results comparable to their models at lower costs—Moonshot Kimi, DeepSeek V4, and Alibaba Qwen have all achieved notable success. Z.ai is on par with them and releases its product under an open license to attract new users and developers. The day before, DeepSeek announced a price increase for the V4 Flash and Pro models, although according to experts, the average price of the older V4 Pro is still lower than the GLM-5.2. According to independent evaluations, the flagship DeepSeek and GLM-5.2 scored 53 points, losing to Kimi K3, as well as the American Anthropic Claude Fable 5 and OpenAI GPT 5.6.

Z.ai is one of the pioneers of artificial intelligence in China and the first large-scale developer in the world to go public. After the release of GLM-5.2, its market value rose to $137 billion, but later fell to $80 billion. Z.ai completed the construction of a data center and installed more than 10,000 Chinese artificial intelligence accelerators for training and deploying artificial intelligence models. Its annual recurring revenue is expected to reach $1 billion.
